Storyline: Boyfriends Josh and Rohan plan a weekend getaway to introduce their parents, only to discover that their rental is home to a 400-year-old poltergeist. (From Max)
My roommate doesn’t like horror movies. When I asked him why, I got a vague answer. So, I was surprised when he said he wanted to watch The Parenting, a Max original comedy-horror film. I didn’t give him time to change his mind.
When it comes to horror films, I love the supernatura. Give me demonic possession, haunted houses, cursed relics, or an antichrist in footie pajamas all day, every day. Heads spinning 180 degrees, furniture taking flight, cryptic cries for help scrawling themselves on a kid’s skin? Yes, please. The Parenting has a little of all of that.
What worked for me. This film boasts a dynamite cast (details below), but let’s be real—Brian Cox getting possessed by an ancient demon is the real showstopper. Maybe he’s played nice guys before, but when I think of Cox, I picture someone malicious, pervy, or just plain shady—which makes him perfect for the role. He nails it.
The film cleverly spoofs classic horror tropes, with winks to The Ring, Ouija: Origin of Evil, The Craft, and—of course—The Exorcist. Oh, and Meet the Parents. Not horror, technically, but The Parenting nails the same soul-draining tension of two families awkwardly colliding. Just with more demons.
What didn’t work for me. The story wanted us to believe the house was fixed up and turned into a Vrbo-type of property. I can’t say more without spoilers, but Zillow would have to gloss over a lot.
Final thoughts. If you’re into horror—any flavor—you should see this film. If you’ve ever wondered what Brian Cox looks like doing comedy while channeling evil, you should definitely see this film. And if you enjoy spotting familiar faces from decades past and quietly judging how time has treated them… well, this one’s for you.
And a reminder—watch the credits for an extra scene.
